Sunday of service 9/20

 


I didn’t need to be at church early for anything, so we had a very long morning to get ready. We both got current on social media on our computers, and Tom spent a very long time studying Isaiah in preparation for Sunday School class. All week he falls asleep during podcasts, then on Saturday night feels unprepared, so this morning he decided to study. I listen to all the podcasts and also try to do my own morning study every day, but it’s really hard to be consistent with that.

Then Tom fell asleep watching a podcast he had turned on while I was still on the computer and almost didn’t wake up in time to get ready to go. Funny morning.

Church was good. Our Sacrament meeting speaker was a high councilor and his talk was very good. He is going through a major trial – an unseen trial. I was reminded again that we never know what people are going through and need to not assume everyone’s life is happy and carefree.

The Sunday School teacher didn’t have a mic this week and kept forgetting to teach to more than the first 3 rows, but what we could hear was good and there were good comments.

We had a new teacher in Relief Society, and I could tell from her intro that she was going to run out of time. I think she got through about one fourth of her prepared lesson before it was time to close. But she will be a good teacher and I’m glad she was called to that.

Tom wanted to go visit a couple of men who are in rehab facilities, but we decided to go home and eat and nap before going.

So we went around 5pm. The first one we visited was brother Ursenbach. He is 88. Nobody was there with him. He is very hard of hearing and hard to understand, but he seemed very alert. He had had his gall bladder removed then had complications afterwards. We were there a very short time because we couldn’t communicate with him at all.

Then we went to see Jim Pierce. He is 80. He had fallen and broken his collarbone, then had fallen again. He has to be able to get himself out of bed and to a chair before they will let him go home. I minister to his wife, so I was able to talk to her while Tom talked to Jim. My companion and I need to find ways to help her while she is spending all day, every day there with him.

We watched a couple of episodes of the Chosen, then half of Follow Him before going to bed. It was a nice Sabbath day.

The recital 10/8

We had scheduled to help clean the Church this morning, and planned to go get Tom’s Prague watercolor painting framed after that. But last night our darling little 6-year-old neighbor came over to give us a hand-written and colored in crayon invitation and a “ticket” for their recital this morning at 9am. The ticket was on a piece of paper that had been torn off. So cute! We definitely could not miss this! There are 2 kids, maybe 6 and 8 or so. The girl was going to play the piano, and the boy was going to sing – The Muffin Man. They had also invited our neighbors who are about our age. I think the 4 of us are like grandparents for the kids.  Their whole family is so cute. We love them. But first we needed to clean the church. We went early in case we could start a little earlier than 8am, but the leaders didn’t show up until 10 minutes late. Blatant Blessings 2

This month someone stole our extension ladder. Ok, it was in the back yard, fully visible, but it is the first time anything has been stolen from our yard. I guess we'll have to start putting things away. A while back my favorite camera died. I looked into getting it fixed, but it was over 3 years old, so I doubt it is worth it. Tom bought me a new camera for Christmas, but he bought me the camera he always wanted, and now he's carrying it with him for work. The ride-on lawnmower died. Tom looked at it and took it apart and found it needed a new pully. We've started having problems with the internet losing connection over and over. I finally gave up and called AT&T (a thing I try to avoid at all costs) and they told me I need a new modem. Mine was over a year old and suddenly became defective. You can't just go buy one either, you have to order it and wait for it to come in the mail. More money means it comes sooner; less money means you wait longer with unreliable ...

Tom’s Garden 6/12

Tom doesn’t just like maintaining the yard – what he loves is creating lovely areas. He has worked for weeks on the area along the back of the house going to the garage. Today he finished getting sprinklers to all the pots. It’s really pretty along there now, except for all the junk on the other side of the sidewalk, but we won’t talk about that. He loves to have his vegetable garden, and likes putting flowers among the vegetables. He hopes to have lots of string beans, beets, cabbage, tomatoes, and cantaloupe this summer.         Tanya came over after her massage and we showed her Enola that we watched last night. It was just as good the 2 nd time and fun to watch with Tanya, who enjoyed all the funny parts, too.   We installed the new kitchen lights that we bought on Thursday. We replaced the ceiling fan first and had nothing but problems with it. The box that the fixture connects to was loose in the ceiling and we tried 4 or 5 different things...
